KSL Kupferschiefer Lausitz is a German mining company headquartered in Spremberg. It is wholly owned subsidiary of the international mining corporation Minera S.A., that specializes in the exploration and mining of precious and base metals.
KSL is currently carrying out an exploration program to reevaluate the Spremberg-Graustein-Schleife Kupferschiefer (copper slate) deposit in former East Germany that was previously investigated during the East German era. The exploration work included exploratory drilling to a depth of up to1300 meters.
The aim is to carry out a study to determine the economic feasibility of exploitation of the copper ore. At the earliest mining could only begin between 2016 and 2020 once all the necessary permits have been obtained and the installations have been built.
According to East German estimates the Spremberg-Graustein-Schleife copper deposit contains 1.5 million tonnes of copper metal. The deposit extends to a depth of 800 to 1300 meters over an area of 15 km in length and 3 km in width. The ore averages 2.5 meters in thickness with thicknesses ranging up to eight meters in places.
Minera SA, the parent company of KSL, was founded in 1962 in Panama and is now managed from Washington DC. Together with its predecessor company, it has more than 45 years experience in natural resource exploration and in the operation of mines and smelting plants. Minera's focus is on the precious metals gold and silver as well as the base metals copper, zinc, tin and lead.
